Artist research and cardboard ring test

Based on my street observation. I found out there are different types of layered objects. Such as broken concrete wall and layers of paint that fades away from arches. These layers evident objects erosion process. Each layer made of different materials. when looking from the top layer it creates a whole range of material contrast.

I lay textured paper on top of each other create similar response. Although each type of paper shows different visual quality, I need to find a way to transform it into 3D object. I looked at Alex Eckman’s surreal collage. He puts layers into holes, which brings in the dimension. Surrealism happened after the WW2 it was inspired by solders’ broken body parts. In relation with my original focus on homeless people’s life on street. I peel off cardboard’s first and second layers. Creating amorphic patterns based on street object’s irregular shapes. To cast cardboard into bronze it must be at least 3mm. Broken glass pieces will stick on top of cardboard to increase its thickness.

Reflection on fancy curation project

There were 9 artists included when curated the exhibition. To make sure those selected works are relevant to my practice. I decide to organize a jewellery show with makers from typology domain project.

In consideration of the exhibition context, I decide to conclude broader range of works that reflects on various political issues. As the exhibition is about politics, jewellery then becomes one approach that communicates ideas between makers and viewers.

In relation with my research paper, Lin Cheung’s delayed brooch was chosen as a direct reference to the Brexit issue. Votsi Elena’s pendent was also displayed next to Ling’s practise. They both using star and European flag colour comments on the Brexit action. In relation with the Brexit theme Banksy’s ‘Brexit Mural’ was also show as a 2D reference. Although their works reflect on the same issue. Banksy’s work was not placed in the same area as the jewellery collection. This layout confused audiences.

As the feedback shows there is no clear connection with each artist’s work. Next time I will arrange works by political themes and divide the exhibition by rooms. Furthermore, I haven’t considered about exhibition’s location, which is a important element affects viewer’s perceptions on works and their understanding of the political background of this exhibition. Based on the display layout I decide to use the corridor in British museum as an alternative location.
