Mask as a powerful object

This week I kept working on the theme of coronavirus, when people talk about coronavirus they will automatically link it to China, where the disease started. From my point of view the majority are blaming Chinese people for causing the issue, which is unfair because no one wants the disease. There is no reason for Chinese people to suffer from the invisible racial discrimination. Instead of expressing my anger through Jewellery design as I did with the Brexit ring or the sextual abused dick adornment. I am going to bring people into a discussion by creating a serious of masks. Masks are a powerful object that can represents a serious of political issues. Such as the black mask worn by Hong Kong protesters and the medical masks for coronavirus. It also links back to the horrible air pollution during industrial revolution. Viewers from different regions may responding to the same object in various personal way. I will look into this subject and represents masks through various media.

Mask and coronavirus

22ed Feb

Instead of working on the gender issue I decide to focus on the coronavirus because gender is a board topic, it includes transgender, gender inequality, LGBT movement. It’s really time consuming if I am looking into all these issues. When it comes to questions about different genders, I cannot make any judgement because there is no right or wrong answer to the gender issues. Individuals have the right to decide their genders. It is the same with the LGBT issue, although these four types of choices existed over time, I cannot define the main reason for their gender choices. Most of the gender related questions were related to person’s background religion and life experience.

Due to my Brexit Jewellery (the turning peddle necklace and the thumb ring) don’t represent Brexit in a straightforward way. I decide to work with masks, which have a direct connection to coronavirus. It was casted into pewter for a quick test and I am going to make it into a body adornment. Making people see masks and coronavirus from a different perspective.

Conceptual thinking

During this week’s tutorial I start considering about three questions within my design process. They are ‘what message do I want to communicate with wearers?’ ‘what do viewers think about when they were worn on the others?’ ‘which kind of interpretation wearers make when they wear my Jewellery?’ I am not commenting on any of the political issues I am representing those issues through movement and ask people to make their own connection with the pieces. People think the kinetic element in my Jewellery is interesting they really enjoy play with the movable parts. However, without any explanation they won’t connect it with any political issues. I still need to find some objects that can help people make direct connection with the political crisis. Such as the ring with a group of people setting on the rubble boat can direct wear think about the refugee issue.

Jewellery and its gender role

9th Feb

I kept on making connection between female body parts and sextual abuse. Referring to a book named ‘Gender and Jewellery’ most jewelry was designed for women is due to women does not have equal social position as men they have to wear jewelry to balance out this gender prejudice. Jewels used to hide precious metal in their moth in order to hide properties from the Nazis. Jewellery were equivalent to money in the concentrate camp.

Jewellery also protect women from getting sextual abuse such as in Kenya after a girl was born they must start wearing metal neck ring, which makes their neck looks extremely long and ugly. The locals believe this ugly feature will protect them from sextual abuse. Wearing Jewellery can keep female safe seems like a positive thing however it is really unfair to keep women from sextual abuse by making they look bad.

Tim Walker exhibition

1st Feb

I went to Tim Walker’s exhibition yesterday his fashion photography is really inspiring. The blooming flowers on the glove is directly linked to the image name ‘gardening gloves. Putting several objects which relates to certain subject or concept can be an alternative response to Varus. I use to use one object to represent political issue but now I think maybe a adding a range of relevant objects can explain my concept much clearer.

The image of a nude with big breasts were quite similar to my feminist vision of sextual body parts. Male designers design jewellery for women’s body parts such as wrists and waist to amuse their sextual demand. However, there are not many jewelleries designed for the same purpose for men. I am going to look into this area and design jewellery for men to highlight their sextual body parts.
