27th Oct Crypt gallery visiting

I went to the Crypt gallery and found some inspiring jewelry designs that relevant to my project based on the St.John international.  Luckily I fit my own interests on world issues with the international projects St. John’s doing.

This concrete piece is commenting on mass produced souvenirs and modern mass manufacture. In my opinion  its none geometric shape and sharp edges are really interesting it reminds me of the broken medal pieces. However I am still looking for a concept to fit in this idea rather than making something for fun.

These two brooches were made by Timothy with out paying too much on his concept. The fragile balloon looks unsafe with the sharp pin brooch next to it. They remind me of the war and unequal sociality in Africa that people are threatened so they keep on protesting and fighting against the government and other country. With this in mind I might focusing on the quality of object to present a common feeling rather than using figures to tell a story.

V&A museum visiting

I went to the V&A museum last weekend trying to develop my four ideas for the order of St John museum further. I went to the medal section and found out modern medals have various shape and each of the design commenting on the issues we are facing. The none geometric can medal inspired me the most not only for  its unique form but also reminds me of the modern recycling lifestyle. Similar to contemporary medals, Plaquettes are also designed in different out forms. In my opinion it would be symbolic for people to understand each medal piece from it unusual shape. My third idea is asking people match medals into the out shapes they should be putting in.  Further more pole can also assemble broken pieces of medal creating their own pattern.

St.John museum research and inspirations

After talking to  curators in St John I was inspired by museum’s history and collections of medals and medical equipment. The first idea was based on the Order’s sailing history and the original purpose of setting up St John ambulance. with this this in mind I observed a silver vassal form the collection and tempting to create a telescope with moveable wooden slice that can be push in and out.

Later on I realized getting people touch and play with the objects are much more memorable and playful. Personally I am interested in jewelry pieces those medals cached my eye. I thought about understanding the history behind each medal and put them into a rang of forms that can be insert onto a wooden board. Visitors should put medals in right place by engaging with the histories.
